PRE-MEETING SYMPOSIUM

The pre-meeting symposium this year is entitled Therapeutic Intervention in the Aging Process and is organized by Randy Strong, Donald Ingram, James Nelson and Richard Miller. It is supported in part by generous contributions from the Ellison Foundation and  Sirtris Pharmaceuticals.

The meeting is timely in that it addresses recent research on basic biology of aging that points to new opportunities for pharmacological intervention in the aging process. This meeting will be  different from other meetings of this type, in that it does not address therapeutics for diseases of aging, but instead explores how to use recent advances in mechanisms of life extension (e.g. manipulation of single genes in critical pathways that confer longevity) to design new therapeutic strategies to increase lifespan and slow aging.

The meeting is organized into four sessions:

  • The first session will discuss strategies for identification of new therapeutic targets,

  • the second will discuss high-throughput screens of chemical libraries,

  • the third session will highlight the results of preclinical studies on interventions designed to extend lifespan in mammalian models,

  • and the fourth will highlight use of data from human studies to find new therapeutic targets.

We look forward to seeing you at these four sessions and joining our discussions and networking opportunities!

With over 170 publications and 5 concurrent grants, Dr. Taylor heads one of the top nutrition and vision research laboratories in the USA.

In addition to his many other awards, Dr. Taylor has been a Senior Fulbright Fellow and has made consistent contributions to the area of vision and aging on many levels from the molecular to the clinical. His contributions are and have been innovative and have opened up new areas of investigation, which were followed by other investigators.  The ramifications of his work are very important as we try to extend healthy aging.

2007 Distinguished Achievement Award

Edward Masoro, PhD - University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio

Dr. Ed Masoro has been a leading figure in the study of the biology of aging for the past 40 years. In particular, this talented physiologist, author of many studies in metabolism in aging animals, is known for his seminal work in caloric restriction.

Dr. Masoro served as Chairman of the Department of Physiology, University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio from 1973-1991, and is the founding Director of the Aging Research and Education Center and is currently
Professor Emeritus in its Department of Physiology.  Having won numerous awards, Dr. Masoro is still active and in demand for presentations and editor of chapters in several books on aging.

GRANT/AWARD ANNOUNCEMENTS

Have a grant you want us to feature?  Tell us about it.

The Brookdale Foundation is pleased to announce the new Brookdale Leadership in Aging Fellowship Program. This program, based on the Brookdale National Fellowship program, was created to encourage the emerging leaders in the field of aging.  The Leadership in Aging Fellowship provides two years of support to junior academics to focus on a project that will help establish them in an area of aging research.  The Fellowship is open to a broad range of disciplines including medical, biological and basic sciences, anthropology, political science, public administration, architecture, urban planning, public health, social work, nursing, business and economics, law, social and public policy, communications, psychology, philosophy, ethics, sociology and any other area related to the field of aging.

We seek candidates who have: (1) leadership potential; (2) an ongoing commitment to a career in aging; (3) a mentor (or mentors); (4) and who will commit at least 75% of his or her time for career development during each of the two years of the Fellowship.

The award* is a two-year grant paid to the candidate’s sponsoring institution in support of the candidate’s research project. The grant amount of up to $125,000 each year is intended to cover 75% of the Fellow’s time, base salary and fringe benefits.

The Fellowship application and guidelines will be available on this website in September 2007.  The deadline for the application is Friday, November 9, 2007 at 5 pm EST.  The finalists will interview with the Foundation’s board of directors in March 2008.

For additional information contact Nora O'Brien at norao@brookdalefoundation.org.

The American Diabetes Association (ADA)-Association of Subspecialty Professors (ASP) Young Investigator Innovation Award in Geriatric Endocrinology provides grant support to new investigators. This program supports entry-level faculty to integrate geriatrics with novel basic, clinical, or health services diabetes research. This award supports pilot studies that may lack preliminary data, but offer considerable promise for the cure, prevention, or treatment of diabetes in an aging population.  Awards are a maximum of $75,000 per year for up to two years. No indirect costs may be requested.

Deadline: July 16, 2007 for January 1, 2008 funding and January 15, 2008 for July 1, 2008 funding.
