2006 - 35th AGE ANNUAL MEETING

AWARDS

Pre- and Post- Doctoral Student Awards (up to $500):

Walter Nicolai Award for meritorious basic biologic aging research by a graduate student or medical student, and the Paul F. Glenn Award for meritorious research in the area of biomedical gerontology by a post-doctoral fellow are presented at the annual meeting.

The prizes are in the amount of $500.00 each for the Nicolai and Glenn awards together with a citation. The first runner-up for each award will be awarded $250.00. The abstract must be original, unpublished research, the results of which will be presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Aging Association.

Travel stipends will be awarded to a limited number of students, minorities and new Junior faculty.  Persons interested in applying for travel stipends are required to submit a CV with an abstract of their current research. All awardees will also present their work in either oral or poster format.

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

Participants who wish to make an oral or a poster presentation at this meeting must submit an abstract which will be reviewed by the Scientific Committee.  Results of this review will be communicated via email, to each applicant.  Please note that only the abstract of the registered presenters will be included in the program and the Conference Handbook.

 

PRELIMINARY PROGRAM

Review the updates to our preliminary program Starting with our September newsletter issue, we shall be spotlighting each session of the meeting and shall provide an ampler presentation of our distinguished speakers.   Also, note that the AGE Debate title has been announced: Amyloid-beta and Alzheimer’s Disease—Center Ring or Side Show?  The debate will be moderated by Dr. Donald Ingram, AGE Editor-in-Chief.  The "pro" and "con" teams will be announced soon!

 

REGISTRATION

Registration for the annual meeting is now open - remember that with the purchase of AGE membership, a meeting discount applies - so consider becoming a member today (or renewing your membership)!  Early Bird fees apply until April 1, 2006.

AGE has booked a block of rooms at the Courtyard Marriott Tremont in Boston - the single/double rate for our meeting registrants is $139/night (plus tax).  Reserve your room early as space is limited!  To review accommodations details, please visit the site.

WELCOME TO OUR NEW AGE MEMBERS:

Karlis Ullis, MD (Scientific Member): Dr. Ullis received his medical degree from the University of Washington School of Medicine in 1970 and trained in pediatrics at UCLA. Dr. Ullis has a clinical practice in Santa Monica , CA specializing in non-surgical Orthopedic Medicine, Physical Medicine, and Rehabilitation, Longevity Medicine, and Sexual Wellness. He has over fifteen years of experience and expertise in human aging particularly involving the Menopause, Andropause (Andrology), growth hormone and sex hormone replacement, nutrition, supplements, obesity, exercise physiology, and human sexuality.  Dr. Ullis has been a consultant to the nutrition-supplement industry, the media and has written three books and published numerous articles on aging, sports nutrition, sex hormones and sexuality.  Dr. Ullis has appeared in numerous national and local TV programs including NBC's Kathy Couric's "Today" show, Maria Schriver's NBC program on Growth Hormone and "Seeking Happiness in America" (1995), and the Sally Jesse Rafael show. He is also a member of the "International Society for the Study of the Aging Male," the Endocrine Society, American College of Sports Medicine, Growth Hormone Research Society and many others.
 

Robert J. Pignolo, MD, PhD (Scientific Member) is Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Geriatric Medicine, at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.  Dr. Pignolo has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors including membership to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and one among only ten individuals nationally recognized with the prestigious John A. Hartford Foundation/ American Federation for Aging Research Award which supports leaders in academic geriatric medicine and aging research. He has been named as a Scholar in The Center for Research in FOP and Related Disorders at the University of Pennsylvania which carries with it funding to conduct research on the mechanisms of ectopic bone formation and is the recipient of the 2005 Austrian Award for Outstanding Research in the Basic Sciences.  Dr. Pignolo is a clinician-scientist whose areas of expertise include the biology of aging, osteoporosis and metabolic bone disease, as well as the burgeoning field of stem cell biology and aging. In addition, he is the director of the Ralston-Penn Center Osteoporosis Clinic and director of the Frontiers in Aging Course offered as an elective to fourth-year medical students.
