Review details about the pre-meeting workshop

36th AGE ANNUAL MEETING - June 1-4, 2007

PRE MEETING WORKSHOP

The 2007 American Aging Association-sponsored pre-meeting workshop will be on Therapeutic Intervention into the Aging Process. This event - co-organized by Drs. Randy Strong, Don Ingram, Jim Nelson and Richard Miller - will bring together experts in various disciplines to focus on strategies for developing therapies that are designed to slow aging and increase longevity. To our knowledge, this meeting is the first of its kind to focus specifically on development of interventions targeting the aging process as opposed to treatment of age-related diseases.

The four topics that will be covered are:

  1. Strategies for Identification of Therapeutic Targets;

  2. Invertebrate models for screening potential therapeutic compounds;

  3. Pre-clinical Testing of Interventions in mammalian models; and

  4. Translational research - Challenges and opportunities.

2007 NIH Director’s Pioneer Award Call for Applications

A key component of the NIH Roadmap for Medical Research, the NIH Director's Pioneer Award supports exceptionally creative scientists who propose highly innovative--and potentially transformative--approaches to major challenges in biomedical research.

In September 2007, NIH expects to make 5 to 10 new awards of $500,000 in direct costs per year for 5 years.

Women, members of groups that are underrepresented in biomedical research, and individuals in the early to middle stages of their careers are especially encouraged to apply.

Open to Scientists Who Are:

·     U.S. citizens, non-citizen nationals, or permanent residents

·     Currently engaged in any field of research

·     Interested in exploring biomedically relevant topics

·     Willing to commit at least 51% of their research effort to the Pioneer Award project

Apply Online:

·    Streamlined application includes a 3- to 5-page essay and 3 letters of reference

·    Apply between December 1, 2006 and January 16, 2007

Deadline: December 5, 2006
Applications Invited for Dennis W. Jahnigen Career Development Scholars Awards

Administered by the American Geriatrics Society (
http://www.americangeriatrics.org/ ), the Dennis W. Jahnigen Career Development Scholars Program offers two-year career development awards to support junior faculty in the specialties of anesthesiology, emergency medicine, general surgery, gynecology, ophthalmology, orthopaedic surgery, otolaryngology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, thoracic surgery, and urology. The award is intended to allow individuals to initiate and ultimately sustain a career in research and education in the geriatrics aspects of their discipline.

Each grant will provide two-year support of $150,000 ($75,000 per year) for salary and fringe benefits and/or the costs of doing research. In 2005, due to funding guidelines from the supporting foundations, the program instituted a requirement that each scholar's institution provide a minimum match of $25,000 per year.  Up to eleven awards will be given in 2007.

Nominations are to be made by the individual's departmental chair.  To be eligible, a candidate must be a physician who is a U.S. citizen or permanent resident; be certified or board eligible to practice in one of the targeted specialties; have a primary academic appointment in a U.S. institution in one of the eligible specialty departments; and have completed his/her training (residency and/or fellowship) on or after June 30, 1997.

Deadline: December 15, 2006
Applications Invited for Julie Martin Mid-Career Award in Aging Research Program

Sponsored by the Ellison Medical Foundation and administered by the American Federation for Aging Research ( http://www.afar.org/ ), the Julie Martin Mid-Career Award in Aging Research program sup- ports outstanding mid-career scientists who have not been engaged in aging research but whose research is relevant and could lead to novel approaches to aging. Also eligible are aging researchers whose research is high risk and thus not attractive to NIH or other traditional sources but has the potential for high payoff in advancing our understanding of basic aging.

Two four-year awards of $550,000 each will be awarded.

The applicant must be an associate professor who achieved tenured status after December 1, 2003. Non-tenured associate professors at institutions with tenure are not eligible. Applicants at institutions that do not offer tenure must demonstrate that their appointment is equivalent to that of a tenured associate professor.

The proposed research must be conducted at any type of not-for- profit setting in the United States. Applicants who are employees in the NIH Intramural program are not eligible.

BASIS - Biology of Ageing e-Science Simulation and Integration System

Goals of the BASIS project

Ageing is highly complex involving multiple biochemical and cellular mechanisms affecting multiple tissues within the organism.  This inherent complexity means that although work on the biology of ageing is now advancing fast, information remains highly fragmented.
BASIS' goal is to deliver a web-based system that will serve the biology-of-ageing research community by helping to integrate data and hypotheses from diverse biological sources.
The aim is to create a community-based web of activity that will sustain the functions of BASIS beyond the initial 4-year period of funding.
